Project Abstract

For this project, I decided to create a family heirloom desk.  The idea behind it is to have a safe place to keep family valuables as well as to leave my children something unique to our family.  In building it, I used a variety of different woods, to include Red Oak and Pine.  The lower portion is a fully functional desk with file-sized drawers.  The upper portion also houses some smaller drawers and visible spaces.   The entire desk as a whole has eleven hidden storage compartments that are fully functional in which to conceal items ranging from weapons to jewelry.  The larger compartments feature locking mechanisms to keep them safely closed and less easily detected.  The desk stands at fifty-four inches tall, fifty-two inches wide, and twenty-four inches deep.  The rich tones of the stain I chose, accentuate the beautiful patterns of the Red Oak, wood, grain used for the body of the desk. It has completely functional parts and the quality of a fine piece of furniture.  I have documented the building of this desk through the use of photos, which may be viewed in the Gallery, and videos, which I have provided on the Video Tour page.

Goal and Objective

My goal in this project was to create something unique for my family to take pride in, with the extended outcome that, future generations will share that same pride.

Deliverables

Upon completion of this project, a quality piece of furniture that can remain in my family for many years has been made available for use within our home.  Throughout the duration of this project, I have pieced together a photo album of the entire process to provide a visual representation of each step toward the finished project. I have provided those photos in the Gallery. Also, I have recorded three short videos to introduce myself, show the completed desk, and show the functionality of the hidden compartments. These have also been provided in the Video Tour.
